Also known as Cardiac Syndrome X or Non Obstructive Coronary Microvascular Disease, Coronary Microvascular Disease is a heart disease that affects the heart’s tiny arteries. In coronary MVD, the lining of the heart’s tiny arteries are damaged through plaque build up causing reduced oxygen flow to the heart.

Clogged Artery with platelets and cholesterol plaque.

What Are The Symptoms?

Note: Typically these symptoms are first noticed during daily activity that mostly women perform on an everyday basis such as, shopping, cooking, going to work or during times of mental stress. It is not as likely that women will experience these symptoms during physical activity (exercise) which differs from CHD where the symptoms are first appear while a person is doing physical activity (jogging, walking on the treadmill).

  • Angina (Chest Pain)
  • Shortness of Breath
  • Sleeping Problems
  • Fatigue
  • Lack of Energy

How is Coronary Microvascular Disease Diagnosed?

Your doctor will diagnose you with coronary MVD based on your medical history, your physical exam and test results. You doctor will also check to see if you have any risk factors that could contribute to the disease.

Since the risk factors for Coronary Heart Disease and Coronary MVD are often the same, your doctor may refer you to a cardiologist who may perform tests such as:

  • Coronary Angiography
  • Stress Testing
  • Cardiac MRI
